I started my training about 18 months ago which sounds like a long time but seeing as I was a trucker who sat on his ever expanding backside for 13 hours a day, drank a little and smoked a bit too, I thought that a long steadily increased training regime would probably be best. The first thing that had to go was my lovely fags. I was expecting this to be an absolute nightmare but having a clear go to aim for made it much easier. I started gently with a few easy 4 or 5 mile rides then steadily increased it to the 13 mile ride to work, which I did 3 times a week and a longer ride at weekends. Once the weather turned bad over the winter I just went to the gym 4 times a week and worked on my aerobic fitness and did a few weights to keep up my strength. With about 3 months to go it was back on the bike 5 times a week with weekend rides of up to 55 miles and then the final 2 weeks I backed the training right off to try and make sure I was fit fresh and injury free for the ride.
